This presentation will center on two long-standing t rends in America: on the one hand\, religious tolerance\, peace\, and good will to everyone as a friend\, and\, on the other hand\, religious intole rance\, conversion of others to one’s own way of life\, and fear of stra ngers. The emphasis will be on the lesser known figures and history of non violence in America.\n\nBarry L. Gan is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy a nd Director of the Center for Nonviolence at St. Bonaventure University. H e is the author of Violence and Nonviolence: An Introduction. He is also c o-editor with Robert L. Holmes of a leading anthology on nonviolence\, Non violence in Theory and Practice\, now in a third edition\; and for twenty- five years he was editor of The Acorn: Journal of the Gandhi-King Society.
