Adults and teens ages 16 & up are invited to sign up to create a quart berry basket at our basket weaving class on Saturday, October 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Cuba Library. Beginner basket weavers will have an opportunity to work to complete a 6” x 6” x 4” basket. The materials will be provided in the kit and instructions will be both hands on and written. Taught by Seneca Traditional Artist, Penelope S. Minner from the Seneca Nation located on the Allegany Territory in Salamanca. Penny has been basket weaving with over 27 years of experience with both traditional materials such as the Black ash and other natural fibers found in our region. The EAB (emerald ash borer) has threatened the ash trees that were once plentiful in this area; Penny enjoys teaching basket making and sharing her passion for the art of basket making. Space is limited.
The Community Arts Grants program is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered in Allegany and Wyoming counties by the Arts Council for Wyoming County.
