Join us at the Cuba Library on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 6:30 p.m. for a presentation by Dr. Barry Gan on “The History of Violence and Nonviolence in America.” This presentation will center on two long-standing trends in America: on the one hand, religious tolerance, peace, and good will to everyone as a friend, and, on the other hand, religious intolerance, conversion of others to one’s own way of life, and fear of strangers. The emphasis will be on the lesser known figures and history of nonviolence in America.

Barry L. Gan is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Director of the Center for Nonviolence at St. Bonaventure University. He is the author of Violence and Nonviolence: An Introduction. He is also co-editor with Robert L. Holmes of a leading anthology on nonviolence, Nonviolence in Theory and Practice, now in a third edition; and for twenty-five years he was editor of The Acorn: Journal of the Gandhi-King Society.
